The scheduled visit of President
Goodluck Jonathan to the National Assembly today to present the estimates of
the 2014 budget has been postponed. The director of personnel, Dr. Ishaya Sarki
on behalf of the Clerk of the National Assembly stated that the new date for
the budget presentation would be November 19, 2013. Although no official reason
was given for the sudden change, reports say the cancellation is centered on
the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), which has not been approved by
the National Assembly. The approval of the MTEF must precede the next budget in
compliance with the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2007.
