Nigeria’s bid for the
non-permanent seat of the United Nations (UN) Security Council has escalated as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, and Nigerian Permanent
Representative Mission received assurances from member-states.In the election scheduled
to take place later today, the Nigerian delegation to the UN intensified
campaigns despite the withdrawal of The Gambia (another African contestant for
the council seat), in support of Nigeria’s bid.On why Nigeria took the
strategy, Prof. Onwuliri said the country could not afford to be complacent
because of its past and current contributions to international peace, security
and democracy or owing to withdrawal of The Gambia. The U.N. General Assembly
elects five new members to the Security Council, and the winners are virtually
certain because there are no contested races between Nigeria, Chad, Saudi
Arabia, Lithuania and Chile.
