Ahead of the governorship
election scheduled for tomorrow in Anambra State, the Independent National
Electoral Commission has said that it would deploy six National Commissioners
and 15 Resident Electoral Commissioners to supervise the governorship election
in the state, in which 23 political parties will be fielding candidates. In a
statement signed by Nick Dazang, Head of INEC Publicity Division, the
commission stated that the election would take place in all the 21 local
government areas with a total of 1,784,506 registered voters. For the election,
the commission said that the state has a total number of 4,608 polling units
and 326 registration areas. Also,
Anambra State has 120 Super Registration Centres and 6,851 Voting Points. Dazang
said INEC will be deploying 12,622 election officials (permanent and ad hoc) to
conduct the election. Meanwhile, 4 policemen heading for Anambra State on
election duties were shot dead by gunmen in Edo State. It was gathered that the
policemen, who were deployed from Osun state and travelling in a truck, came
under fire at the Benin by-pass after which four of them were believed to have
died. It could not be ascertained whether the attackers were armed robbers or
they deliberately attacked the policemen. The Edo Police spokesman Emmanuel
Eguavoen said he had not been briefed about the situation. Meanwhile, the
police have deployed 28,000 officers and men in Anambra State for tomorrow’s
governorship election. This is in addition to Air force and naval personnel
already deployed in the state as well as the curfew imposed in the state
between today from 10pm till sunday. Also, President Jonathan didn’t hold the
weekly Federal Executive Council Meeting because he was in Anambra campaigning
for the PDP. This election obviously seems like a do or die affair yet they say
free and fair elections…
